Biography
Gregory Lyons is Associate Professor of Music and the James Alvey Smith Endowed Professor at Louisiana Tech University where he teaches applied percussion, directs the percussion ensemble, coaches the drum line, and serves as the coordinator of instrumental music education.
As a solo and ensemble performer, Dr. Lyons has made appearances in Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Michigan, Utah, and California. Recent performances include the 2025 Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago with the Ninkasi Percussion Group and the 2025 International Clarinet Association’s Low Clarinet Fest in Phoenix with Delamo Duo. In 2024 he performed at both the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy with the Ninkasi Percussion Group. He is principal timpanist with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra (Alexandria, LA) and also performs regularly with the Shreveport Symphony and the Monroe Symphony.
Each summer, Dr. Lyons coordinates New Music on the Bayou, a contemporary classical music festival, which he co-founded in 2016. He also hosts the North Louisiana Youth Percussion Ensemble Festival at Louisiana Tech, which began in 2012. He earned degrees from The Ohio State University (DMA), Central Michigan University (MM), and the Wheaton College Conservatory (BME). He is a past president and former treasurer of the Louisiana Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society, and is a proud endorser of Grover Pro Percussion, Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, SABIAN Cymbals and Majestic Percussion.
